Classical Acupuncture Training – Why My Training Matters
When people look for acupuncture or Chinese medicine, they often focus on qualifications, years in practice, or the conditions treated.
While those things matter, my ongoing training in classical Chinese medicine through the Full Strength Chinese Medicine programme with Andrew Nugent-Head has shaped my practice in a deeper way.
Rather than simply adding another certificate, this training has changed how I assess the body, how I understand patterns of imbalance, and how I approach treatment during consultations at The Jade Centre in Leeds.
In practical terms, it has refined how I practise Chinese medicine every day.
Learning from Andrew Nugent-Head
I study with Andrew Nugent-Head, who is widely respected as one of the leading Western teachers of classical Chinese medicine.
Andrew’s background differs from many modern training routes. He trained extensively in China within traditional medical lineages and has spent decades studying and translating classical Chinese medical texts. His teaching focuses on Chinese medicine as a complete medical system, rather than a simplified or protocol-driven version.
Much modern training, even very good training, often relies on standardised treatment frameworks. Andrew’s approach moves away from this.
Instead, the focus is on:
-
Understanding how the body functions as an integrated system
-
Developing strong diagnostic skills, including pulse diagnosis
-
Recognising patterns of strength, weakness, and imbalance before illness becomes obvious
-
Treating the individual rather than working from fixed protocols
This kind of training is demanding and requires ongoing study, observation, and clinical reflection. That is also why relatively few practitioners pursue it.
How This Training Has Changed My Practice
I chose this training because I wanted to deepen how I understand what I see in clinic and how I work with the people who come to see me.
A More Thorough Approach to Diagnosis
Rather than beginning with the question “What condition do you have?”, I often start somewhere slightly different:
How well is your body actually functioning?
This means I look carefully at:
-
Where the body is coping well
-
Where it is struggling
-
Why symptoms have appeared at this point in your life
-
What may have been gradually weakening the system over time
-
Why previous treatments may not have helped fully
This shift has changed how I interpret symptoms. Instead of simply matching symptoms to treatments, I’m assessing the overall strength and balance of the system.
Treatment Built Around the Individual
Many acupuncture approaches rely on standard point combinations for particular conditions.
Full Strength Chinese Medicine moves away from this formula-based thinking.
In my practice this means:
-
Treatments are designed around you, not just your diagnosis
-
Fewer assumptions are made about what “should” work
-
Treatments evolve as your body responds
-
Care is taken not to push the body when it needs support
Often this leads to steadier, more sustainable progress rather than short bursts of improvement followed by setbacks.
Supporting Long-Standing or Complex Health Issues
This training has been particularly helpful for people who feel their health problems never quite resolve.
Many patients come to see me when they are experiencing things like:
-
Chronic or recurring symptoms
-
Health issues that do not fit neatly into a diagnosis
-
Tests that are “normal” but symptoms remain
-
Treatments that provide only temporary relief
By focusing on strengthening how the body functions overall, I can often work more effectively with problems such as:
-
Ongoing fatigue
-
Hormonal patterns that do not stabilise
-
Persistent pain or inflammation
-
Stress and nervous system overload
The aim is not to override the body, but to help it regain its ability to regulate and recover.
Why This Level of Training Is Uncommon
This type of training is less common because it requires significant commitment.
It takes years of study rather than short courses. It demands careful observation, patience, and the willingness to continually refine your understanding.
I chose this path because I wanted to practise Chinese medicine as a complete medical system, not simply as a set of techniques.
The result is a deeper framework for understanding complex or long-standing health issues.
Classical Chinese Medicine in Practice
Classical Chinese medicine is a traditional approach to acupuncture treatment that focuses on understanding how the body functions as a complete system. Rather than treating isolated symptoms, it looks at patterns of strength, weakness, and imbalance within the body.
In my clinic at The Jade Centre in Leeds, I apply this classical framework during consultations by combining careful questioning, pulse diagnosis, and observation of the whole system. This allows treatments to be tailored to the individual rather than relying on standard acupuncture protocols.
For many people, this approach can be particularly helpful when symptoms are complex, long-standing, or have not responded fully to previous treatment. For example, Many patients come to see me when they are experiencing long-standing health concerns, including fertility challenges.
What This Means for You
For patients, this training usually shows up in practical ways during consultations.
People often notice that:
-
They feel properly listened to and thoroughly assessed
-
Treatment evolves as their health changes
-
The approach feels calm and measured
-
Their health is understood in the context of their whole life, not just individual symptoms
It is not dramatic or flashy medicine. It is careful, thoughtful, and grounded.
For many people, it is also the first time treatment has felt as though it is addressing the wider picture of their health.
In Simple Terms
Training in Full Strength Chinese Medicine has helped me develop:
-
Deeper diagnostic confidence
-
A stronger understanding of how the body functions as a whole
-
A classical framework for complex or long-term health concerns
-
Greater precision in how and when I treat
This approach shapes every consultation at The Jade Centre.
If you have ever felt that something about your health has been overlooked or only partially addressed, this depth of training is often why the work we do here may feel different.
